Facts About Betsy Ross
- Betsy a.k.a Elizabeth Griscom was born on January 1, 1752 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
- She was one of thirteen children and the eighth oldest. Her parents were Rebecca James and Samuel Griscom who were Quakers.
- She was married 3 time; her first husband was John Ross who was an Anglican. Quakers did not allow Quakers marrying anyone outside of their religion so they eloped, which resulted in being kicked out of the Quaker meeting house.
- In 1776 John was killed by a gunpowder explosion during the American Revolution.
- Since Betsy had to take care of their business she would sew flags all day for Pennsylvania.
- In 1777 Betsy married a man name Joseph auburn who was a sailor but he was captured in 1781 while he was sailing at sea by the British and died in the prison in 1782.
- Betsy's third marriage lasted the longest of the three; a total of 34 years.
- She got married again in 1783 to John Claypoole who was in prison with her second husband.
- John died in 1817 because of a long disability which caused Betsy to struggle in her life a little bit, but she stayed strong throughout the years she lived and she did not marry after John Claypoole.
